Meet George Stephanos

George Stephanos
US Coast Guard (Retired)
About
George served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 30 years. After his military retirement, he served as the Director of Public Works for the City of Bowie, a city of 60,000 people in Prince George’s County Maryland. He is currently retired.
George’s Coast Guard career began with 2 years as an engineer on the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind, which proved to be an incredibly adventurous assignment including three deployments to the Arctic, one deployment during the “Drug War” to the Caribbean, and two challenging ship repair periods to maintain the 40 year old ship.
After two years on ship, George served in several different civil engineering positions and later in senior leadership positions including Command of the Integrated Support Center St. Louis. George was fortunate to serve as an engineer in Coast Guard Activities Europe which had responsibilities for radio navigation systems in Europe, Africa and South America.
His second career, with responsibilities for public works and as the city’s senior engineer for the City of Bowie, opened his eyes to the challenging and extremely rewarding work serving in local government.
George is originally from Adelphi, Maryland. He married his wife Denise, of Lindenhurst, New York, in 1985. George and Denise had their first two children, John (deceased) and Maria, while stationed in London, England. Norah and Despina were born in Washington, DC and Plantation, FL respectively. Norah and her husband Alan provided George and Denise their first granddaughter, “Georgie”, in 2025!
