Bruce Herring

US Coast Guard (Retired)

About

After retiring from the Coast Guard after 20 years, Bruce and Nancy (wife of 36 years) have for the last 20 years made Pennsylvania their home and raised their four children. With a not so empty nest yet, they are enjoying life with several of their adult children, 4 cats and a dog. Bruce continues to work as an engineer and project manager at a small college and continues to deflect any discussion of retirement. He tries to stay active with walking, rowing and occasionally biking.

The first 20 years of life involved being born into a military family with one older brother, moving around a bit and then settling in Georgia for a long enough stretch to be from there. Winning the life lottery and getting an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy made the transition into the second 20 years quite the adventure. Graduating with an engineering degree, ensign bars and an assignment to an ice breaker in Wilmington NC set the tone for the next 20 years. Opting to stay on shore after that first assignment, a variety of tours from California, to Virginia to Florida expanding the family along the way kept life interesting and fun.

Looking forward to the next 20 years, eventual retirement and endeavoring to stay active life continues to be an adventure. The continued connection with his Northwind buddies is a high point of the yearly activities.
